“I take back what I said.” Carol stretched out on the couch, her feet propped on the opposite padded arm.

Dwayne and Armando were playing quietly in their room, and Morgan had followed, most likely, to pester them.

“Which was?” A glass of water warmed in Tansy’s hand, the cloudy ice cubes melting away.

“That he wouldn’t last.”

Surprised Carol admitted to that, Tansy didn’t respond.

“Never found one I cared to spend a great deal of time with ... for that same reason,” Carol continued, “but ...” She halted.

Tansy lowered her glass to the end table and settled it in the midst of the ring formed in the stain.

“The fact he didn’t take off when faced with everything has impressed me. Plus, I saw him look at you.”

Tansy’s face warmed. She brushed her fingertips across her cheeks.

“Don’t know why that makes you blush. You’ve been pretty bold since you moved here. There was that one I caught you with ... there in my own room. You weren’t embarrassed then.”

“It isn’t embarrassment. It’s ...”

What? Feelings. Emotions. A strange sense of her being incredibly female and him, a male. She had no explanation for that.

Carol flapped her hand. “Whatever it is, I’m glad for you to find someone solid. You can’t live here forever.”

Tansy’s stomach tensed. That was true, and she’d thought of it more than once. But to leave Dwayne and Armando, to abandon Morgan was unthinkable. They needed her, and she needed them.

She pushed to her feet, willing any thought of separation away. “I’d better make sure they’ve done their homework.”

Carol said nothing. But then, everything about the children, over time, had fallen to her.

That was the other reason she couldn’t bear to leave. No one would pick up the slack. There’d be no one to do their laundry, see that they were fed and bathed.

She stood in the doorway to the boys’ bedroom and leaned on the doorframe. Morgan had ensconced herself in Dwayne’s bed, a plastic tea set in her lap. Armando was leaning over the side waving a video game console beneath Dwayne’s nose.

Tansy smiled. The only way she’d ever leave was if she could take them with her, but how would she do that? She had no job, no home, nothing that recommended her.

And it took way more than knowing how much she loved them, though sometimes, the size of that was almost more than she could bear.
